Experimenting with Crochet Threads: Black Motif Necklace

Posted by Donna Dolezal Zelzer on 10th August 2008

This project is my first experiment using some of the novelty threads I got from a friend on Friday. My idea is to crochet the burgundy/wine thread into a chain, then add crocheted motifs. I made two motifs using multi-colored thread, but I think the black/silver motifs will look the best.

I crocheted a variety of different motifs last night while watching Red Dwarf. Next step is to place them on the chain, decide how to arrange them and if I need more.

Crochet, Ravelry and Me

Posted by Donna Dolezal Zelzer on 9th August 2008

I recently joined Ravelry, a social site for people who crochet and knit.

I love this site! I used to crochet (and do other crafts) a lot, but what with one thing or another I drifted away. I’ve been wanting to start crocheting again and seeing all the wonderful projects on Ravelry is truly inspiring in an I-want-to-make-something-like-that! way.

What’s so great about Ravelry? Well, it has all the usual social networking things: your profile page, friends, on-site messages, forums and groups. You don’t have a blog, but you can pull your own blog into your profile (and also hook blog posts to individual projects). This is actually a plus for me, as I can write about crocheting here and not have to start yet another blog.

But what sets this site aside and makes it truly unique and wonderful is your notebook. This is where you share your projects (both in-progess and completed), your upcoming projects, your yarn stash, your books, needles and hooks. You can include photos with your projects and share a project to any of your groups. People can comment on each other’s projects and you have a favorites section where you can add projects and other things you find especially interesting.

If you crochet or knit and you’re not on Ravelry, you should be. Right now it’s in beta and you’ll have to apply for an invite. You’ll find the form right on the front page. It takes 2-3 days, so the sooner you apply, the sooner you’ll be in.

See you there! (And be sure to friend me. I’m Lilacmoon.)
